Rampant power cuts haunt Noida, Gr Noida residents

With the mercury dipping with each passing day, rampant power cuts are haunting the residents of Noida and Greater Noida.

While in Noida, the power supply is stopped from 12.30 noon every day for an hour the scene is worse in Greater Noida where the residents are bearing the brunt of power cuts for as long as three hours every morning and half an hour in the evening.

The residents of Noida complained that they face trouble doing the daily chores because of power cuts. Bani Purkayastha, a 60-year-old woman who lives with her 68-year-old husband in Sector 22, Noida said,

‘The mercury is only dipping and we need to warm ourselves with the heaters. But because of the rampant power cut in the morning time, we cannot turn on the heater and have to bear the cold. We are old and find it tough to fight the cold without heater,’ she said.

The industrial areas in the city are also facing the crunch due to the extensive power cuts. Because of the five-six hours power outage, sources said the production drops by 50 per cent sometimes. Noida Entrepreneurs Association, president, Vipin Malhan has written to UPPCL on the subject.

‘Every night, the power supply is stopped from 10 pm to 2 pm. The power outage of six hours affects productivity. Instead of providing us uninterrupted power supply, the power corporation has proposed to hike the electricity rate. It should rather think about the ways to stop power theft that is as much as 34 per cent in the city,’ said Malhan.

The demand of electricity in winters touches 850 megawatts in Noida whereas the supply is only 720 MW. There is a shortage of nearly 130 MW. Also sources say that there is nearly 20 per cent power theft by the residents in the villages affecting the power supply.

While residents and industrialists are facing trouble due to frequent power cuts, the NPCL authorities seem to be unaware of the situation. When Millennium Post contacted Arvind Rajvedi, superintendent engineer of NPCL, he said that there is no such problem in the city and ‘We are supplying sufficient power’.

In Greater Noida, power cut is a daily routine and NPCL authorities say that it will continue for a few days. Samarjit Mohanty, deputy manager of NPCL, Greater Noida said, ‘The main reason for a power outage is dense fog. Because of the fog, the chances of earthing increases as the water particles develop on the power lines. So we take precaution and cut power supply from 9-11.30 am.’
