Rampal’s supporters protest at Jantar Mantar, residents face troubles

Delhi police on Tuesday barricaded all entry and exit points to the Jantar Mantar Road at about 10 am till late in the evening. Nearly 2,000 devotees of self-styled godman Rampal, who had started trickling in the area about 8 am, managed to stage a demonstration demanding withdrawal of police forces from outside his ashram in Hisar leading to inconvenience for the residents.

The protesters claimed that Rampal was unwell and he was being treated at an undisclosed location. They also claimed that all allegations against the ‘saint’ are false and police getting into the ashram premises was nothing but harassment.

To deal with any untoward incident, the police had kept three water cannons ready along with about 200 officials at the spot. ‘We have set up barricades at all entry and exit points of the Jantar Mantar Road. Necessary action shall be taken against all those who violate law and order,’ said SBS Tyagi, additional commissioner of police (New Delhi).

However, nobody was arrested or detained till late in the evening.

Police also did not allow anyone to enter the barricaded zone even on foot, nor did they allow anyone to come out of it, to make sure that the protesters do not come out and stage demonstrations elsewhere – especially outside the Supreme Court, as per their plans.

As a result of the blocking of the road, people got stuck in the blockaded zone. They could not go to their offices or elsewhere once the restrictions were put into effect at 10 am.
