Rajnath reviews onion, potato prices

The union home minister Rajnath Singh on Thursday reviewed prices of essential commodities including onions, potatoes and tomatoes in the national capital and asked the city administration to step up awareness drive to inform people of the latest prices. The Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung and Delhi chief secretary SK Srivastava briefed the home minister that the state administration has launched a massive crackdown on hoarders. So far 1082 premises have been raided and 150 traders have been prosecuted. Jung also apprised the minister that more than 18,000 quintals of essential commodities stored illegally have been confiscated.
Jung said strict vigil on distribution of essential commodities through the Fair Price Shops is being maintained. In the last three months, 789 Fair Price Shops have been inspected, 143 shops penalized and cases have been lodged against 45 shop licensees and transporters. Singh directed to intensify and continue the enforcement drive.
Jung also told the minister that onions and potatoes are being sold at more than 200 locations through mobile vans at Rs 20 per kg and Rs 18 per kg respectively. Besides this, the government has started sale of onions and potatoes at the same rates from 40 government premises which will be increased to 300 in the coming days.
