The Gujarat chief minister, who is being portrayed as the prime ministerial candidate by a section of party leaders, found his way back into the powerful parliamentary board of the BJP after six years. The re-induction of Modi assumes significance as it was BJP president Rajnath Singh, in his earlier tenure, who removed Modi from the post.
The Gujarat chief minister has also been made the member of the central election committee and there are indications that he might be heading it. Modi also ensured that his key aide Amit Shah got appointed as the general secretary of the party. The former home minister of Gujarat has been charge sheeted by the CBI in the Sohrabuddin Sheikh fake encounter case.
Advani’s decreasing influence was witnessed in the new list of office bearers, as Madhya Pradesh chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan was not accommodated in the central leadership. However, Prabhat Jha who does not share a good equation with Chouhan was made the vice- president of the party. The other leader who had the backing of Advani and could not find a place was Aarti Mehra, who was expected to be made the head of the women’s wing of the party, whereas the veteran leader despite trying hard to ensure the exit of general secretary Dharmendra Pradhan, failed to do so.
The list also saw the BJP president’s men finding their place in the new list, Varun Gandhi and Rajiv Pratap Rudy have been made general secretaries of the party. Sudhanshu Trivedi, a close aide of Rajnath Singh, has been appointed as the spokesperson of the party. The other prominent names who could not find a place in the new team are Jaswant Singh and Yashwant Sinha. Former vice president of the party Bhagat Singh Koshiyari, Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank, Shanta Kumar, Kalraj Mishra and Vinay Katiyar have also been dropped.
