Rajasthan rides high on tourism

Situated on the western coast of Indian peninsula, Rajasthan embraces its own tourism legacy. Be it the camel rides at Jaisalmer, or a desert safari at Thar, or even a pious visit to Ajmer, the state has a lot on offer for its diverse tourists.

Rajasthan was awarded the National Tourism Award for the year 2011 – 2012 for being the second best state in the category of comprehensive development of the Tourism Sector. Furthermore, the award for best heritage hotel was also given to the state’s, Jaipur based Samode Haveli.

Andhra Pradesh was awarded the first and Gujarat as the third best State respectively in the category of Comprehensive Development of Tourism.

At a ceremony organised at Delhi’s Vigyan Bhawan on Monday evening, the President of India, Pranab Mukherjee gave awards to all the winners of various categories. The Principal Secretary and Commissioner, Tourism, Govt of Rajasthan, Rakesh Srivastava received the award from the President. The Union Minister for Tourism, Dr K Chiranjeevi and Secretary, Tourism, Govt of India, Dr Parvez Dewan were also present at the occasion.

Commenting at the occasion, Rakesh Srivastava said that under the leadership and guidance of the Chief Minister, Ashok Gehlot and the Tourism Minister, Bina Kak, the tourism sector has progressed tremendously. He further added that owing to the State’s prowess in tourism, foreign tourists coming to India always have Rajasthan as a preferred tourist destination.

‘The state’s folk music, renowned monuments, rich heritage, colorful culture, well conserved wild life sanctuaries and national parks as well as the vibrant desert attract a large number of foreign tourists. In the past two years there has been a significant growth in the number of tourists coming to Rajasthan and this has been made possible by adopting a proactive marketing and development strategy,’ Srivastava added.

The Rajasthan Relief Riders Programme was also conferred with a special award at the ceremony for the most Innovative and Unique Tourism Project at the function.
