Raja’s supporters, party show no sign of guilt

With slogans reading 'Raja conquered Tihar jail', the former telecom minister A Raja was welcomed in Chennai to a rousing reception by the party workers on his first visit to his home state since his arrest last year. Raja, who is the the prime accused in the 2G spectrum scam, was recently released on bail after spending 15 months in Tihar Jail.

An English news channel quoted Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) chief Karunanidhi as saying that he is happy to see his younger brother.

The Bharatiya Janata Party, however, criticised the welcome the prime accused of the 2G spectrum scam received. 'An official reception by the party should not have been held. It would have been different if he had been welcomed in his constituency by his supporters,' said the BJP vice president Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi.

With party supporters thronging the airport with a band playing folk numbers and slogan shouting, it seemed that the Dalit face of the party had won a battle. The DMK supporters wore T-shirts with slogans hailing Raja printed on them and carried placards that described Raja as bold and bright sun.

The special CBI court had allowed the former telecom minister to visit his home state between 8 and 30 June. Raja had sought the court's permission also on the ground that the trial proceedings would not be undertaken from 9 to 30 June due to the summer vacation.
