Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati on Thursday said Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi was misleading the scheduled caste community by organising a Dalit Conclave in the city.
“Dalits were a harassed lot under the Congress-led UPA government. No scheme or project was launched for the welfare of the weaker section. Now, with one year left for the assembly elections the Congress is trying to woo the Dalits. Congress is interested in the Dalit vote bank and not its welfare,” she said.
Reacting to Gandhi’s participation in the Dalit conclave Mayawati said, “Post- independence, the Congress remained in power for over five decades but did very little for the uplift of the scheduled caste and tribals. Congress leaders merely sold dreams to the have-nots to get their votes. To empower Dalits, Kanshi Ram launched the BSP in 1984,” she added.
Equating the Congress Dalit conclave with the BJP’s farmers’ conclave Mayawati said, “Both Rahul and Modi are trying to mislead the common man. Even though the policy of the NDA government is anti- farmer, PM Narendra Modi is busy attending the farmers’ meet,” she said.
