Rahul takes charge as Cong vice-president, says will focus on positive politics

Newly-appointed Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi Wednesday said he wanted to try and reduce the ‘negative politics’ and get into ‘positive politics’, which would take the country forward.

After being appointed as the vice-president of the Congress, Rahul Gandhi took official charge at the party’s head office at 24, Akbar Road on Wednesday evening. Congress leader number 2 said he would focus on practising ‘positive politics’ on his first day in office.

Refusing to answer questions from reporters, before heading into a meeting with party general secretaries and heads of departments at the All India Congress Committee (AICC) headquarters  Gandhi said that his party, the Congress ‘is the best instrument for change, the best instrument to bring youngsters into politics and I want to try and use this instrument to bring change and make it accessible to youngsters.’

He also said, ‘Our entire environment of politics is acrimonious - I want to get into positive politics because that will take this country forward.’ 42 year old Gandhi did had addressed the AICC session in Jaipur, after being appointed as party’s vice-president, where he made an emotional speech and said that the Congress party and India was now his life.

Addressing party leaders at the 24, Akbar Road party office here, Gandhi said he wanted to make the Congress party ‘accessible to as many people... this is my sentiment’.

He said political discussions tended to be ‘extremely acrimonious, fighting with each other over small reasons... want to try and reduce that, don’t want to get into negative politics,’.

‘We are a dynamic country and this country can do wonders... Lately I feel a lot of the discussion is negative... there is a lot of positive things happening everyday... Many youngsters are transforming things.’

He was elevated Saturday to the post of party vice president at the Congress Chintan Shivir in Jaipur. His emotional speech struck the right note at the party brainstorm session.
