Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi on Thursday expressed ‘strong disapproval and deep disappointment’ over the Supreme Court order which declared homosexuality as illegal, saying he agrees with the Delhi high court verdict which had read down Section 377 of the IPC and decriminalised gay sex in the country.
‘I personally believe that these are matters of personal freedom. I think, I would agree more with high court verdict,’ Gandhi said, after members of the union cabinet expressed their opinion voicing disappointment at the 11 December SC verdict. His comments came hours after Congress chief Sonia Gandhi said she was she was disappointed that the apex court had reversed the high court judgment and hoped Parliament would address the matter.
Meanwhile, the UPA government has issued an official statement saying that it is weighing all options to decriminalise homosexuality. Finance minister P Chidambaram said the Supreme Court ruling was ‘wrong’ and all options would be looked at to set right the Supreme Court order.
Apart from Congress, the other political party to openly come out in defence of the rights of the LGBT community was the Arvind Kejriwal-led Aam Aadmi Party, which issued an official statement
on Thursday.
