“Rahul Gandhi using these words is very unfortunate, undemocratic. And because of these words, I am demanding that Rahul Gandhi should make an apology to the country because it is not only defaming Sushma Swaraj, but defaming the country’s Foreign Minister, who is the representative of India in the world,” Union Minister Nitin Gadkari said.
“If Rahul Gandhi does not apologise, then it is a serious problem. We will have to file <g data-gr-id="28">criminal</g> defamation case against him,” the BJP leader <g data-gr-id="29">said,</g> while describing Gandhi’s remarks against Swaraj as “childish” and “immature politics”.
Stressing that allegations against Swaraj were “baseless”, he said that she had not violated the law, Constitution or indulged in any corrupt activity. “Allegations against Sushma Swaraj are baseless. She has neither violated any law nor our Constitution. She has not indulged in any corrupt or illegal activity. She is a very prominent leader of the country,” Gadkari said.
Speaking on the Lalit Modi controversy, Gandhi had said: “What we have said is that (there will be) no discussion without resignation. Sushma has done a criminal act. He (Lalit Modi) is a ‘fugitive’. You have signed it (the recommendation for <g data-gr-id="30">grant</g> of travel document).”
<g data-gr-id="47">Parl</g> will not function till resignations happen: Rahul
Indicating no let up on stalling Parliament, Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi on Friday questioned Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s “silence” and made it clear that it will not be allowed to function till External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj and two Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Chief Ministers – Vasundhara Raje and Shivraj Singh Chouhan – resign. Gandhi also hit out at the NDA government over the contentious Land Acquisition Bill, saying it is an “anti-farmer government” and asserted that he would not let the Centre “take away” farmers’ land easily.
“Modi had said neither will he indulge in <g data-gr-id="58">corruption,</g> nor will he allow anyone to do it. But right now he is not able to see anything –neither Vyapam, nor Vasundhara Raje and not even what has been done by Sushma Swaraj in his Cabinet,” said Gandhi, who is on a <g data-gr-id="51">kisan</g> <g data-gr-id="52">padyatra</g> of this parched region of Rayalaseema in Andhra Pradesh. Recalling that the Prime Ministre used to deliver speeches <g data-gr-id="55">everyday</g> during the 2014 Lok Sabha election campaign, Gandhi said: “People are now asking why the person, who used to speak every day, has gone silent. This question is in the mind of the common man. The Prime Minister should say something. He is getting damaged by this (not speaking).” In a clear indication that Congress will not allow any let up in its demand for the resignation Swaraj and the Chief Ministers, he said he has made it clear in Parliament that it will not function till the resignations happen. On the Land Bill, he alleged that the present government at the Centre is “anti-farmer”.
