Gandhi expressed this while addressing a mammoth rally at Ambedkar Nagar in the presence of Sheila Dikshit, Shakeel Ahmad, JP Agarwal and Ramesh Kumar. He said that there was no comparison between the functioning and commitment of the Congress and BJP.
The Congress vice-president touched on his family’s and Dikshit’s connection with Uttar Pradesh in an apparent attempt to reach out to the sizable Poorvanchali population in the city.
‘The opposition BJP makes tall claims but Congress has done it on ground,’ he said at a rally in Ambedkar Nagar.
‘Delhi international airport is considered the second best in the world. Look at the transport infrastructure. Two million people are traveling in Delhi Metro daily. Earlier, there used to be shortage of electricity while we have 24-hour power now. The whole infrastructure has changed,’ he said.
Speaking on the issue of corruption, which has been used by BJP to target the UPA government, Rahul said Congress gave people the RTI Act to fight it.
‘The decisions that used to be taken inside closed door have come out in the open. You can ask the government anything,’ he said.
Congress believes in empowering people besides development, he said. ‘We have done better in electricity, in schools, in health... and have also empowered you. Our philosophy is about your emancipation,’ Rahul said.
He countered BJP’s claim that the NDA government built highways, work on which came to a standstill during the UPA rule, saying the Congress-led alliance had built three times more roads than the NDA.
Rahul also underlined social amity in the city and said BJP and Shiv Sena have tried to disturb peace in places like Maharashtra and Karnataka.
Meanwhile, chief minister, Sheila Dikshit stated that the party’s achievements and accomplishments during last 15 years are an open book. ‘We worked hard to lay a strong foundation for the future. Our work is visible and can be felt easily. The principal opposition party in Delhi has nothing to talk about other than corruption. They have been leveling corruption charges without any proof.
‘The BJP has also been making false promises and have been inciting the traders to add fuel to the burning rates of inflation. They worked over time to ensure that the onions and tomatoes rate touch the level of Rs 100 per kg. We have not seen any person who bought these items at these rates. Ours is a sensitive government and we deployed more that 300 mobile vans, as part of our market intervention efforts to stabilise the rates.’
While the people had started assembling by 10.30 am, Rahul Gandhi arrived at the venue at around 1.15 pm, apparently making a number of people restless.
After that, Dikshit requested people to stay back and listen to the Congress vice president.
She also requested police personnel to allow Congress workers distribute water among people.
