The fact that Rahul Gandhi’s appeal is on the wane as the much talked about Youth Congress membership drive is seeing a massive decline in numbers in the past months has been reported. What is now being done to keep a tab on existing members, who are not even bothered to be in office, must be a first for a political outfit.
With the youth cadre of the Congress party displaying a lack of commitment towards their organisational roles, the offices of the student and the youth wings of the party have now been equipped with biometric attendance device. While the office of the National Student Union of India (NSUI) put up the device few months ago, in the Youth Congress office the device was installed on Wednesday.
The Youth Congress, of late, has been plagued by low attendance of its national office bearers, with the office remaining almost empty during the day. ‘Few national office bearers were found to have marked their attendance via proxy, as they were absent from office,’ said a senior office bearer of the Youth Congress. Sources say low attendance of the national office bearers had become a cause of concern for the organisation and the step to install the biometric attendance device was taken to curb the problem of fake attendance. ‘This will bring discipline within the Youth Congress office bearers and the biometric device will also systematize the procedure in office,’ said Youth Congress general secretary Vikas Upadhyay. The biometric attendance system was first installed in the NSUI office where the problem of office bearers not coming to their offices was noticed. The dismal performance of the Youth Congress in the recent assembly elections is also cited as one of the reasons for the office coming up with stricter norms. The youth congress has already initiated performance review of office bearers across the country.
Though office bearers do accept that the device has been installed to keep a check on Youth Congress functionaries, the Youth Congress president denies it is done to keep a tab on its office bearers. ‘The device has been installed to keep a check on the office staff and not the national office bearers,’ said Youth Congress President Rajiv Satav.
