Put disaster on hold while security tries to connect

You would think once bitten, twice shy. But apparently this is not the case with the security officials of Indian Parliament. Though the Parliament was attacked in 2003, the senior Parliament security officials are ignoring even the basics of securing the highest institution of the country.

Sources in the Parliament told Millennium Post that an official complaint regarding bad quality wireless phones, which are used for internal communication purposes, is languishing at the Parliament security office, despite being 'locked in'. In Parliament, when a complaint is 'locked' it would be brought to the attention of senior officials immediately.

'During commonwealth games (CWG) 2010 we were given new Tetra sets for better connectivity and technology. But we've been having problems with these new sets. The connectivity has gone from bad to worse. We think the previous Motorola sets were better than these ones as far as connectivity is concerned,' said the sources.

The lower level security officials were compelled to lodge this complaint during a contingency duty on 3 April morning at Vijay Chowk Iron gate number 1. The sets apparently were disconnected for five minutes. Again, on 5 April, there were connectivity problems through the day.

'Just imagine. If someone strikes, we couldn't even communicate about it because of bad connectivity. Working sets are the basic need to communicate. It had been a frequent problem with these sets. And, on Thursday, it went off for five minutes. After that, we all decided to 'lock the complaint' so that an official action is taken into this,' an official, deputed in Parliament, on conditions of anonymity said.

Sources further said that a lot of these sets have been damaged and that a lot of security officials have gone back to using Motorola sets. 'When compared to Motorola sets, these Tetra sets are good technologically. But due to its connectivity problem they lose all their advantage,' the sources said.

Besides, another technology, TTP (a device meant for better connectivity) was installed at Parliament entrance gates to avoid any untoward incident in case Tetra sets would stop working.

When contacted, the joint secretary, security, Parliament, P R Meena said, 'The matter has not come to my knowledge. If something like this has happened, it should have been brought up. Sometimes, if such technicalities arise, they are rectified.'
