The occupy UGC movement entered its fiftieth day on Wednesday even as the issues between the student groups and the government remains unresolved. To keep up the pressure on the government, the protestors had planned a march to Parliament on Wednesday but were stopped much ahead at the Ferozshah Road.
Speaking on the march, Anubhuti, the media coordinator of JNU said: “When the government refuses to listen to you; you are left with no choice but to protest.” The student groups have been protesting against UGC’s order of scrapping of non-NET fellowship and been demanding on restoration, enhancement and expansion of non-NET fellowship for which the Ministry of Human Resources has formed a committee to look into the matter. The march took place even though there was a delay from its expected time due to the demise of renowned poet of JNU, Ramshankar Vidrohi.
Speaking outside the UGC office before the march, CPI leader and Rajya Sabha member D Raja criticised the government on the commercialisation of education and creating a social divide. “Despite the repeated adjournments, I have tried to bring up the issue of occupy UGC in Rajya Sabha,” said D Raja and also criticised the Delhi Police on their ways of dealing with students. While marching towards Parliament the protestors were stopped at Ferozshah Road by the Delhi Police. The police here detained a few protestors.
“Even though Delhi Police want to suppress our movement by being aggressive in their action we will not bend,” stated Prashanth, a member of the All India Democratic Students Organisation.
