Scores of protesters, who included students from Jawaharlal Nehru University and several social activists, on Monday staged a protest outside the Israeli embassy here demanding an end to Israel’s air strikes in Gaza.
The call for the protest was given by Jawaharlal Nehru University Student’s Union against the ongoing military offensive on Gaza.
As the protesters marched towards the embassy on Aurangzeb Road, they were stopped by the police who put up barricades, triggering a skirmish, after which around 70 of them were detained and taken to Tughlaq Road Police Station.
The protesters, including CPI(ML) leader, Kavita Krishnan, alleged they were manhandled by the police. ‘Palestine isn’t free. But how come we in India aren’t free to protest peacefully on Delhi streets?’ tweeted Krishnan.
Police officers said that they had already informed the protesters that they will not be allowed to stage a protest in the high-security zone where section 144 also remains imposed.
