Professor Yogesh K Tyagi took over as the Vice-Chancellor of Delhi University on Thursday succeeding professor Dinesh Singh whose term ended in October.
Various issues including promotion and appointment of teachers, decision on the reservation policy and CBCS took a backseat with the V-C’s post lying vacant for over four months. Tyagi’s immediate concern would be to clear the uncertainty over the grading system under the Choice Based Credit System (CBCS).
“I wish to work for the university by taking all stakeholders on board. Everybody’s views will be taken before arriving at any decision. I am not saying there will be no mistakes but rest assured there will be no dishonesty,” he said while addressing the gathering.
Other than several former Vice-Chancellors of various universities, Tyagi was welcomed by university officials and others, led by pro Vice-Chancellor Sudhish Pachauri, who had been the acting V-C since October last year.
Upendra Baxi, former DU V-C, talked about the importance of autonomy and accountability. “You will be the V-C who will see the centenary celebration of the varsity,” he said. However, Dinesh Singh, who had an eventful tenure which saw a massive controversy over the Four-Year Undergraduate Programme (FYUP) which was rolled back after intervention by the University Grants Commission (UGC), skipped Thursday’s programme.
Tyagi, PhD in Legal Studies from JNU and LLM in Legal Studies from Columbia University, has been appointed by the HRD ministry for a term of five years after his name was chosen from a panel of four persons by President Pranab Mukherjee, who is the Visitor of all Central universities. Tyagi was accompanied by his mother who expressed her happiness on the occasion. Unlike his predecessor, the new V-C is not taking up residence at DU and will continue to live in his present residence at Jawaharlal Nehru University.
