Prima facie no evidence of bomb blast: Bidhannagar CP

A day after the minor blast near CRPF camp here which housed the camp office of NIA probing the Burdwan blast, Bidhannagar city police on Tuesday said preliminary probe indicated that there was
no evidence of bomb blast and crackers could have been used to play mischief.
‘Prima facie there is no evidence of bomb blast as we have not found smell of explosives or remnants. We have found one or two eye witnesses and it is likely that crackers could have been used to play mischief,’ Bidhannagar city police commissioner Rajeev Kumar said. He, however, had said a detailed investigation would be carried out into the incident.
Bidhannagar police officers said that they have already sent samples collected from spot for chemical test. ‘We are waiting for the results’, they said.
The police was also looking into CCTV footage at the Technopolis bus stand which is close to the CRPF camp, they said.
Debasish Dhar, additional police commissioner, Bidhannagar Police Commissionerate, last night said that they were suspecting the material used could be a firecracker.
Amjad Sheikh remanded to NIA custody
A city court on Tuesday remanded Burdwan blast accused Amjad Sheikh, an alleged key member of Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) terror group, to NIA custody till 20 November. Md Mumtaz Khan, chief judge in Bankshall Court, remanded Amjad to 10 days’ NIA custody on a prayer by the agency’s counsel. He was produced before the court under tight security with a large number of both Kolkata Police and paramilitary personnel guarding the premises. Sheikh, alias Kajal, a resident of Birbhum district of West Bengal, was arrested on Monday and is alleged to be the main person who used to procure material from open market meant for making improvised explosive devices.
Call for high security around NIA camp raised in assembly
The demand for strengthening security around the camp office of National Investigation Agency (NIA) here probing the Burdwan blast was raised in West Bengal assembly on Tuesday.
Raising the issue during the mention hour, CPI(M) member Sahajahan Choudhury urged the state government to streamline security measures around the CRPF camp at Salt Lake area in the city which houses the camp office of the anti-terror probe agency, in the wake of a minor blast near it on Monday.
