Prez’s daughter likely to contest with Congress ticket from GK

Known for being fiercely independent, Sharmishtha Mukherjee (48), daughter of President Pranab Mukherjee is in all likelihood to be the Congress candidate from the prestigious Greater Kailash constituency for the upcoming Assembly elections.

Mukherjee, who has been holding regular interactions with the people of her constituency for the past two months, has gone on record saying if she was given a chance, she would definitely contest the Assembly polls.

Despite representing the first family, a nobility which comes with privileges and protocol, she has preferred an ordinary life, living in her own three-bed room flat in Greater Kailash rather putting up at the spacious Rashtrapati Bhavan.

Mukherjee had formally entered active politics on 22 July, 2014, and had been actively participating in the party’s agitation against the power tariffs and water shortage in Delhi.

If Mukherjee enters the fray, then the Greater Kailash seat is expected to witness a keen contest. It was AAP’s Saurabh Bharadwaj who had won the seat by bagging 43,097 votes against BJP’s Ajay
Kumar Malhotra, who logged only 30,005 votes in the last elections.

Congress candidate Virender Kasna polled only 19,714 votes.

The same seat was won by BJP leader Vijay Kumar Malhotra by a margin of about 12,000 votes against his Congress rival Jitender Kumar Kochar in 2008 elections.
