The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Sunday said the Union Cabinet’s decision to recommend the imposition of President’s Rule in Arunachal Pradesh is completely unconstitutional and a blot on the country’s democracy, barely two days before the Republic Day celebrations.
The party alleged that Union Cabinet’s decision reveals the anti-federal character of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led Centre and proves that all its slogans about ‘cooperative federalism’ are nothing but misleading and disguised to impose its real agenda of political intolerance.
CM Arvind Kejriwal has expressed “shock” over the development, terming it as the “murder” of the country’s Constitution. “Union Cab recommending Prez rule in Arunachal shocking. Murder of Consti on Rep D eve. BJP lost elections. Now acquiring power thro back door,” Kejirwal tweeted.
The party said the Union Cabinet’s decision, which is in complete violation of the Supreme Court judgment in SR Bommai case (that stated the strength of any government can only be tested only on the floor of the House), will not withstand judicial scrutiny and should definitely be defeated in the Rajya Sabha. The AAP has appealed to democratic forces across the country to ensure that such dictatorial moves of the Centre are opposed tooth and nail to save democracy.
“The sequence of events in Arunachal Pradesh over the last two months show that the BJP’s Central government used every dirty trick from gross misuse of Governor’s office to engineer defections, with the sole intention of dislodging the state government in a bid to install its own party government through the backdoor....” said AAP in a statement. It stressed that the Centre’s politically intolerant attitude needs to be strongly rebuffed to safeguard the federal structure of the Constitution.
