Pregnant woman commits suicide; husband let off by in-laws

A-28-year-old woman, reportedly pregnant, has allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself from a ceiling fan in Gaur Garden apartment, Noida Sector 119, on Sunday morning. Sending the body for post-mortem, the police had detained her husband, a software engineer, working with a multinational company for investigation.

However, they had to free the engineer, as her family members refused to lodge a complaint. Also, no suicide note has been found.

According to the police the woman, Samta Yadav, was living with her husband Nardev Yadav. On Sunday, Nardev reported to the police that Samta has committed suicide by hanging herself.

The police reached the spot and took the body into possession. Nardev informed police that he had gone to the New Delhi railway station to drop off his mother-in-law. On his return, he found the flat locked from inside. He knocked several times, but there was no answer. Eventually, he broke the door open, only to find his wife hanging. Since the woman, who was also enrolled in a PhD programme with a private university, was said to be pregnant, the police had detained her husband and informed her family members of the matter.

“As we questioned Nardev, he accepted that Samta was not happy in her married life, but denied of any rift that could have led her to suicide. Her family members too, were reluctant to lodge a complaint against the husband,” said Anoop Singh, Deputy Superintendent of Police (Noida).
