Pranab’s seat Jangipur goes to by-polls, sees 60 pc turnout

The by-polls in the Jangipur Lok Sabha constituency in Murshidabad, where President Pranab Mukherjee’s son Abhijit Mukherjee is a contestant, assumed importance as Pranab from the same constituency got elevated to the post of the President. Abhijit Mukherjee is pitted against Muzaffar Hussain [CPI-M] and Sudhangshu Biswas [BJP] in a multi-cornered contest that is generating a lot of political interest.
There is an electorate of 12, 40,000 in the Lok Sabha seat from where Pranab Mukherjee had been elected regularly and the last time in 2009 prior to his elevation to the highest office in the nation. The by-poll was necessitated by the resignation of Pranab Mukjerjee.
According to latest reports the voter turnout was 60 per cent on Wednesday. Voters in 12 booths under Shruti and Khargram blocks boycotted polls to protest against some local grievances that included bad roads and no electricity. The TMC has not put up any candidate against Abhijit Mukherjee as a political gesture.
SHUTDOWNS TO MARK PRESIDENT’S BELGAUM VISIT
The Shiv Sena has called for shutdown in four districts of Maharashtra to ‘express the emotions’ of people over President Pranab Mukherjee’s visit to Belgaum, the disputed town on the Maharashtra-Karnataka boundary, a party official said Wednesday. The president is Thursday scheduled to visit Belgaum and inaugurate the new legislature building [Vidhan Bhavan] there after the town was accorded a second capital status by the Karnataka government recently. Senior Shiv Sena leader and legislator Diwakar Raote here said the party has given a call for shutdown in Sindhudurg, Kolhapur, Sangli and Satara districts, all bordering Karnataka. The main Kolhapur-Belgaum highway will also be blocked, Raote said.
