Pranab would not have okayed reforms: Subrata

TMC leader and WB Panchayat Minister Subrata Mukherjee claimed on Sunday that had Pranab Mukherjee remained Finance Minister, he would not have accepted ‘anti-people’ reforms initiated by the UPA govt.

He further said that Mukherjee was made the President as the UPA government would not have been able to carry out the said reforms with Mukherjee at the helm of the Finance Ministry. ‘I have been repeatedly saying that the UPA’s decision to allow FDI in retail and cut subsidy is against their commitment in Parliament,’ Mukherjee told Millennium Post.

Opening up a new front against the UPA government, Mamata Banerjee has also recently accused the Manmohan Singh govt of going back on its word on involving all stakeholders before opening up multi-brand retail FDI.

Mukherjee’s statement echoes Banerjee’s accusation a few days ago that the UPA government had not honoured the commitment made by Pranab Mukherjee in Parliament that he would not go ahead on FDI unless a national consensus was reached. Referring to the assurance given by Pranab Mukherjee in the Parliament, Banerjee had said, ‘The decision to permit 51 per cent FDI in retail trade is suspended till a consensus is developed through consultations among various stakeholders. The stakeholders include political parties and states.’
