Pranab to call on Mamata to seek support

Highly-placed sources in the Congress have told Millennium Post that the finance minister and United Progressive Alliance's presidential candidate Pranab Mukherjee is most likely to meet the West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee around 22 June in Kolkata. The sources say that Mukherjee will meet her and personally ask her to support his candidature for the upcoming presidential election.

Mukherjee will also visit his ancestral village Kirnahar during this trip to West Bengal.

However, on Wednesday, a member of the Trinamool Congress, Derek O'Brien, suggested that Mukherjee might be trying to break the party. He wrote on Twitter, 'Pranab M directly called up a TMC MP seeking support. Politically ethical to do? Or trying to break TMC? Try & try again. Won't break.'

While the Trinamool Congress has maintained all through that it will back A P J Abdul Kalam in the presidential race, but with Mukherjee's meeting with Banerjee likely to go ahead, the frozen state of relations between the two parties may just thaw.
