Power generation at Ghazipur plant to begin from Jan 2015

After missing three deadlines and after announcement of waste-to-energy plant at Ghazipur around two years back, the East Delhi Municipal Corporation (EDMC) has finally swung into action. The civic body has announced to start power generation from January next year as construction work has begun last month. With the commencement of the project, the plant will be able to generate 13 MW electricity from the waste of land fill site.

A senior officer of East Delhi Waste Processing Company (EDWPC), which is constructing the project, said, ‘The waste-to-energy plant at Ghazipur was expected to be operational by July this year but now it is expected to start generating power from next year onwards.’ The company is a joint venture of Delhi government and its private partner — Infrastructure Leasing (IL) and Financial Services (FS).

In the renewed deadline, the company has assured East Corporation to start production of electricity by December. ‘The work on the project has been started and it will take six months to complete it. Once power is generated, 50 percent will be given to the government while remaining will be sold to private bodies. Revenue earned from the project will be used for development of the site,’ said Mahendra Ahuja, chairman of ward committee of Shahdra South Zone, EDMC, adding that a total of 1300 metric tonnes garbage will be used daily for power generation which will help in 50 percent disposal of the total coming in at land fill site. According to sources, the energy production unit of the plant is still under construction which is likely to start its trial run by the end of September.
