Power companies loot the consumers: BJP

Delhi BJP has strongly condemned the decision of Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission (DERC) to allow power companies to recover fuel surcharge. The party has alleged that DERC is favouring power companies and had forgot it was constituted to protect the interest of consumers.

'It has been seen that the DERC is working in the favour of the power companies since its formation. It is not listening to the people,' said Delhi BJP president Vijender Gupta and leader of Opposition Vijay Kumar Malhotra in a joint statement. 'The decision to recover up to 7 per cent fuel surcharge from the power consumers for the months of May, June and July by the DERC is an arbitrary decision,' added the leaders.

The party has demanded Delhi Government, DERC and the Central Electricity Authority that until the CAG of India does not complete audit of the accounts of three power companies of Delhi, they should neither be allowed to increase power tariff nor recover fuel surcharge. The DERC had a meeting with the power consumers and RWAs for discussing an increase in power tariff and imposing fuel surcharge.

'Even after the silent protest and opposition by various representatives, the DERC took one sided decision and allowed the power companies to recover fuel surcharge, which is an anti-people decision,' added Gupta. Under this decision, the power companies have been allowed to recover fuel surcharge every third month.

The companies recovered fuel surcharge at the rate of 7 per cent in February, March and April 2012. Now they have been allowed to recover additional fuel surcharge from 4 to 7 per cent.

In the quarters of the month of August, September, October and November, December, January 2013, the DERC is likely to give permission to recover increased fuel surcharge to the companies. 'This way, the power companies shall increase power tariff by 28 per cent in the name of fuel surcharge in one year. The companies shall loot the consumers by both hands because they have demanded Delhi Government and the DERC to recover increased power tariff up to 70 per cent,' contented Malhotra.

BJP also alleged that the companies are cheating the consumers in various ways. The fast reading electronic metres installed by them have already increased the power bills by two to three times.
