The Delhi cabinet on Monday gave its approval for shifting the high tension (HT)/low tension (LT) lines in unauthorised colonies. The decision was taken at a cabinet meeting chaired by chief minister Sheila Dikshit.
While interacting with the media after the meeting, Dikshit said that overhead high tension/low tension (HT/LT) lines passing over residential areas, especially unauthorised colonies, pose a serious threat to human life.
‘Funds are being released for the work under the ‘provision of essential services in unauthorised colonies’ scheme to provide basic amenities like roads and drains, water supply, sewerage and street lights,’ she said.
Dikshit further said that the shifting of HT/LT lines in unauthorised colonies had hitherto not been covered under the scheme. With extending the scope of the scheme, shifting of HT/LT lines has also been included under it.
Dikshit said that Delhi MLAs have been drawing the attention of the government towards the need to shift these lines as a number of deaths have taken place due to overhead lines. There have been instances of releasing 50 per cent of the amount by the power department for shifting of HT/LT lines in certain colonies.
‘The city government was keen to bring out a more practical policy with feasible solution to overcome the menace of overhead HT/LT lines,’ said Dikshit.
The chief minister also said that with the decision of the cabinet, it has since become possible to allow undertaking the projects of shifting of HT/LT lines in unauthorised colonies by sourcing the funds from the scheme.
The funds will be released by the urban development department to the power department on the basis of their recommendations. Initially, the scheme will be applicable in 895 colonies that have been regularised at the first instance. For the rest of the colonies, orders will be issued in due course.
