The hike proposed recently by the central government in postal rates is preposterous. The decision is yet another blow to the common man. Snail mail may be slow but has been a good and reliable friend of the people. This is yet another arbitrary economic decision taken by the government for which there is no real rationale. The Indian posts have been a service which has helped the common man, particular urban, communicate. Many people still rely on postal services, which remain a vital service for people. The government in even thinking about hiking these rates is being insensitive to the people. Its lack of concern about people was highlighted just recently in the controversy over the definition of what constituted the poverty line. Despite the horrible rise in prices it set it at a level where it seemed that people were well-off when they weren’t. At this time the government and its organs seemed almost clueless of what the minimum wage of a large section of the people in the country. Those who take these decisions seem to have little idea of the burdens of the people. Now, with the proposed hike in postal rates, further hurdles are been placed in the ability of the people to communicate with each other.
It is not at all clear as to why this government has arrived at the notion that it must raise postal rates for the decision does not help the common man but will only help vested interests at the expense of the people. Why this government assists vested interests is for the people to ask. The numerous collusive scandals that this government is involved in, do suggest an answer. It is known that lobbies operate at the expense of the people and only serve themselves, and those in power lap up the crumbs. As these scams show, it is not easy to prove culpability, with many of those involved unscathed as yet by the law and likely to escape. The decision to hike postal rates may harm the Indian posts, build over many years, but the government does not seem to care. Why are services such as these which are a common resource of the government being dismantled? Why are the decisions of this government anti-people? Is there consensus in Parliament over this decision? It is for the people to place this government under greater scrutiny for all does not appear to be what it seems. It is not just postal rates that are set to rise. It is not just the rise in vegetable prices. There is all manner of price rise which is driving the people to dispair.
