Post X-Mas, mercury may dip to 2 degrees Celsius in city

According to Mahesh Palawat of Skymet: “At present the South-Westerly winds, which have certain moisture content because of humidity levels, is flowing across NCR.

However, around December 22-23 strong winds due to Western disturbances is expected to originate and their obstruction caused in the Western Himalayan region on way to Iran will result in heavy snowfall in parts of Northern India on December 24.

“The icy cold  Northerly winds, flowing from the hilly regions is then expected to bring down the temperature of Delhi and regions around it sharply.”

Situated at a low density zone, with winds containing no moisture, the forecasters have also  alerted that situation of foggy conditions with low visibility levels is expected to come in  and the plans to tackle with such tough situations will have to be made by the authorities and the system accordingly.

Even though Delhi has witnessed temperatures dropping to 5 degrees Celsius, the flow of South-Westerly winds will not result in sudden decrease in temperatures said the forecasters.

When asked by Millennium Post  whether winter this year has set in late, Palawat said: “Yes as

compared to previous years, the winter is setting in late in Delhi this year. Earlier, the cold spell which is been experienced now could also be felt in November.”

Palawat added that the main reason behind this is the weak Western disturbance. Palawat, however, refused to relate this to the phenomenon of climate change and said: “A comprehensive research needs to be done on this.”

Palawat also mentioned that it also related to weather cycles. If some years have seen late setting in of winter in Delhi, chances are that the next cycle may see winter setting in early.
