Post Nirbhaya: Five rape cases reported in city daily

However, in a shocking revelation, the data of Delhi Police shows that as many as five cases rape are reported in the national Capital every day.

In 2013, 1,398 rape cases were registered in Delhi. Shockingly, despite the security measures, the number of rape cases have risen by 35 per cent so far this year. Till 15 November this year, 1,879 cases of rape have already been reported across the Capital. Since, January 2013, on an average five women are raped on a daily basis. Surprisingly, the statistics show that before the infamous Nirbhaya gang rape in 2012, comparatively less number of rape cases were reported in the city.

According to the data of Delhi Police, in 2012, 623 rape cases were registered at police stations across Delhi. A Delhi Police official, requesting anonymity said “large number of women are approaching police to seek justice and hence the rise in figures of rape cases. More number of complaints are being registered and therefore, figures have shot up.”

Meanwhile, ever since the BJP government took charge at the Centre, the Capital has witnessed 15 per cent rise in rape cases. As many as 1,221 rape cases have been registered since May this year.

The data revealed that 176 cases were registered in May, 190 cases in June and 193 in July. In the month of August, around 238 rape complaints were filed. Similarly, in September, as many as 197 rape cases were filed, 141 in October and 86 cases till 15 November, were registered  at various police stations. It is important to mention that in the past six months, around 8,636 cases of crime against women have been filed.

“Apart from the make-over, nothing has changed post Nirbhaya gang rape,” Natasha Aggarwal, working in a BPO in south Delhi said. “Despite all the new amendments and measures taken by the concerned authorities, Delhi police failed to curb rape in the city. Rather, the rape cases have been increasing day by day,” another city girl Aradhana sighed.
