Post B’luru attack: Police pull up socks, step up security

Commissioner BS Bassi, on Monday, assured that the counter terror front of Delhi Police has been braced up keeping in view the IED explosion in Bangalore on December 28.

“We have braced up arrangements in the counter terror front. Local police have been briefed about alertness and specialised units like the crime branch and special cell have been asked to keep tab on all their sources,” said BS Bassi.

He further said that on December 31 evening, local police and teams of counter terror front shall be stationed at places around Connaught Place, India Gate and all malls in the city.

Delhi Police also urged people in the national capital to be more alert and act as the eyes and ears of Delhi Police. “On noticing anything suspicious, I urge people to call the 1090 helpline of Delhi Police which deals with terror-related issues,” Bassi added.

On Monday, all district heads briefed the topmost cop about threat perceptions concerned with their respective districts and how they planned to tackle that. Later in the day, the top brass of Delhi Police went to the Ministry of Home Affairs and Bassi himself informed the ministry about the situation and the arrangements by Delhi Police to deal with it, informed a source.

Delhi was already reported to be in a red alert situation till January 26 and security was beefed up in and around airports, railway stations, bus terminuses, metro stations, hospitals and important market areas. After the incidents at Sydney and Peshawar, security was further heightened around shopping malls, restaurants, five star hotels and schools in the city.

According to a source, US President Barrack Obama is scheduled to visit India in the last week of January and depart from the national capital after visiting the Republic Day ceremony. However, the heightened window of vigil may be extended keeping in view the assembly elections which may take place by the end of February.

Bassi also briefed the media about arrangements on New Years eve and said that Delhi Traffic shall run special drive against drunken driving from December 31 evening till the wee hours of January 1.
