Portrait of an artist as a visual imager

Artist Sanjay Bhattacharya represents a powerful voice of hope and perseverance of contemporary Bengal and the country as a whole. Born in 1958, his art has its foundations in the understanding that a visual image created by an artist integrates perceptions of the world around one with one’s conception of their real essence.

His ongoing exhibition Cathartic Expressions, presents a collection of drawings full of spontaneity, as visible in the image of a young man taking a refreshing bath, an old man reminiscing in the afternoon sun, of ants foraging for grain, of a woman cooking in a makeshift village kitchen or of two rakes remembering past deeds with little remorse.

In fact, these works evokes the immediate impact of the environment, the romance of stained walls and utensils of daily use and the symbolism of ritual objects like the trident and the temple bell trying to impose itself on day to day life.

This particular work of his is significant because they sanctify the labour of long suffering rural mothers and daughters in law, so often the subjects of his paintings. But it is essentially his message of optimism that comes through in the visual of ants foraging, each step forward awakening fresh hunger. It reminds one of how it is need that feeds progress. And catharsis carries gems of truth one does not express easily otherwise.
