Population along LAC thinning, Rajnath expresses concern

Usually, most neighbouring countries try to keep their border areas populated so that the people living in the area could work as frontier guards. Even in India, similar initiatives have been taken in some border areas but continuous thinning of population along the 4,056 kilometers of LAC — demarcates India from China — which passes through Jammu and Kashmir, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh and Sikkim has now become a cause of concern for the Indian government.

It was found that over the years, villagers living in most of the difficult terrains along the LAC, have migrated towards the nearby towns due to due to lack of essential services including medical, ration and education facilities.

It was learnt that on 4 July, chief minister of Arunachal Pradesh Nabam Tuki has submitted a memorandum to the minister of state, home affairs, Kiren Rijiju, about the sparse population in the border areas.

‘There is a need to promote developmental activities in these areas so that residents are willingly to settle there and act as our frontier guards along the border,’ Tuki said in a letter (a copy in possession with the Millennium Post) to Rijiju.
