Pollution levels rising in Yamuna, water supply to national capital will be affected

The Delhi government has been actively taking up the issue with the Haryana government and the centre. In a meeting, held approximately two years back, involving the chief minister of both Haryana and Delhi, the Haryana government had assured its counterpart in Delhi that it would take long term measures to manage waste from the Panipat drain that flowed into the Yamuna. The meeting was held in the presence of the union minister of environment & forest. But unfortunately, despite repeated persuasion by DJB, nothing substantial has been done.

On Monday morning, DJB had dispatched an inspection team to identify the source of pollution. The team comprising of officers from Treatment and Quality Control wing of DJB has reported that the rise in pollution is attributable to high concentration of industrial and domestic waste in the untreated waste flows being discharged through Panipat drain.

While taking up the matter with Central Pollution Control Board and Haryana, DJB is constantly monitoring raw water parameters and taking all necessary steps to ensure that water supply to the citizens is potable.

Delhi Jal Board chief executive officer Rajiv Kumar has spoken to principal secretary, Haryana Irrigation, to take immediate steps to prevent the flow of pollutants from entering the Yamuna.

At present, due to curtailment of production at Wazirabad and Chandrawal WTPs, areas mainly in central, old, north and parts of south Delhi and NDMC will receive reduced supply at low pressure for a couple of days. Normal production shall be restored at both the plants as soon as pollution level recedes.
