Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) has issued an order to shut down 112 factories in Wazirpur Industrial Area for flouting environmental regulations.
In a letter to Tata Power Delhi Distribution Limited, Delhi Jal Board, deputy commissioner (North MCD) and local SDM of Wazirabad area, the government has ordered the closure of power and water supply, besides cancellation of building and manufacturing licences.
The committee members have stated that a team consisting DPCC, Delhi Jal Board, Delhi State Industrial and Infrastructure Development Corporation (DSIIDC), Wazirpur Industrial Area and All India Plastic Industries Association representatives had carried out a survey on 24 February, 2014.
‘Samples of waste water were collected from three locations and it was found that the pH levels were far below the standard laid down for the inlet of Common Effluent Treatment Plant, which means that the industries engaged in the activity of stainless steel pickling did carry out any treatment and the waste water was discharged into open drains meant for storm water,’ the committee members said. The collected samples were sent to the lab and it was found that the pH level was 0.8, 1.6, 0.9 and 0.8, which clearly indicates that these industries engaged in stainless steel pickling without the requisite water treatment procedure.
An inspection was also carried out on 15 March, during which it was observed that all drains in the area were choked due to the silt collected from the industries and that a large quantity of metallic silt from pickling units were being discharged directly into the storm water drains.
The Delhi Pollution Control Committee, after such observations, has ordered the closure of 112 factories under various sections of the Water (Prevention & Control of Pollution) Act, 1974 and Air (Prevention & Control of pollution) Act, 1981. Committee members said that these factories shall stop its operation for ‘stainless steel pickling with immediate effect’ and asked the Tata Power Delhi Distribution Limited and Delhi Jal Board to disconnect electricity and water supply to these factories.
The committee also asked North Delhi Municipal Corporation to cancel their licenses directed the sub divisional magistrate to seal these units.
