Politicians oppose idea of paid naming of streets, parks, hospitals

Several leaders have united against the proposal of the North DMC municipal commissioner P K Gupta to allow individuals, groups and institutions to directly approach naming committee to name the streets, roads, community centres, parks, schools and hospitals in their locality. Gupta, in his budget speech on Wednesday for 2015-16, proposed a resolution to allow the individuals and institutions to choose the names and pay a certain amount to the civic body as fee.

‘The naming committee of the civic body will scrutinise the social and moral significance of the proposed names. The names finalised by the committee will be put for approval of the standing committee like any other resolution of naming of such places,’ said P K Gupta. He, however, added that the scheme is motivated by the initiative of transport department to auction VVIP registration numbers which had added lakhs to its coffer.

Presently, councillors of the corporation can propose names of any famous social worker or politician for such places which must get approval of the ward of the councillor. The names so cleared shall be put up before naming committee for approval which is headed by the mayor with standing committee chairman and leader of the House. These names are finally put up in the full meeting of the House for clearance.

‘The introduction of monetary aspect in the naming of such places and public places of the corporation is against the very concept of democracy. It will bring riches in place as they always have more money as eminent social workers and politicians are against the very idea of collecting money,’ said Mukesh Goel, leader of opposition. He strongly opposed the idea and added that his party would do its best to scrap this proposal from the budget proposals. The ruling BJP also rubbished the idea.

‘The million dollar question is how the commissioner fixes the fee? If he is talking about auction like VVIP numbers, we will not approve the resolution,’ said Mohan Prasad Bhardwaj. He further added that the commissioner is within his rights to put proposals but the final authority to approve the budget is the full meeting of the House.
