Political battle over dengue

With 36 cases of dengue being reported on Tuesday, Delhi government at a cabinet meeting lashes out at the three Municipal Corporations of Delhi [MCD] saying corporations are lacking a result oriented approach in dealing with dengue scenario in the national capital.

The political fight between Bharatiya Janata Party [BJP] ruled MCD and Congress ruled Delhi government is clearly seen as various officials from both the bodies are busy passing the buck.

Health minister A K Walia was seen criticising MCD on several occasions by blaming them for not taking their responsibility seriously.

Earlier, when media asked chief minister Sheila Dikshit about the dengue crisis, she refused to comment, saying ‘ask MCD officials about it’.

At the Delhi cabinet meeting on Tuesday, Dikshit expressed  grave concern over the rise in the dengue cases in the city. The cabinet also asked the corporations to pull up their socks and take urgent necessary steps to avoid the worst.

The number of cases this year has risen to 985 including nine cases reported from NCR.

The municipal corporations, on the other hand, claim they were doing their best to check mosquito breeding. MCD officials also lamented that government is not helping much and just believe in the meetings.

On condition of anonymity, an MCD official said, ‘Every year, we follow the same routine for checking dengue menace. As elections are approaching, political leaders are trying to get mileage out of the scenario by playing a blame-game’.

Talking to Millennium Post, Chairman standing committee, North Delhi Municipal Corporation, Yogender Chandolia said, ‘Government should strengthen us more, instead of complaining.

We are working very sincerely and this is just a political gimmick by Congress party’.
