Police to pull up private cab firms for improper records

During the investigation of the case reported on Friday in which a woman returning from a dinner party was allegedly raped, physically assaulted and intimidated by a cab driver, it later emerged that the concerned cab company had no record of the driver. “Nor did they note which cab was sent to attend the woman’s call”, revealed the police officer investigating the case. He further said there was no GPS (Global Positioning System) installed in the car.

“Most of the cab companies boast about GPS systems in the cars. However, in Friday’s case it emerged the driver was using mobile GPS, which was switched off during the crime and couldn’t be tracked”, the officer added.  The cab company could also provide the mobile number of the accused which has not been switched on since he committed the crime on Friday night.

Deputy commissioner of police (North), Madhur Verma, informed the driver accused in Friday’s rape case didn’t wear a badge. “It’s quite shocking that the company has no relevant record at all. Also, wearing of badge has not been made necessary by the company. We have also come across similar cases in the past.
This entire case is being investigated on the basis of inputs mostly given by the woman”, Verma added. Shockingly, Delhi Police has also come across numerous drivers working in the private cab companies, who do not even have a valid driving licenses.

“It is imperative on part of the private companies to look into the backgrounds of the drivers they employ. The companies are equally liable to be pulled up in serious cases like the one that was reported on Friday night,” the senior official added.

Meanwhile, the driver, accused in Friday’s rape case has been identified. However, the police have not revealed his name, fearing that he might run away once his name flashes in the media.
