Delhi Police is planning to book the owner of the vehicle, be it a private one or a commercial vehicle, along with the driver who commits any crime during his presence in the vehicle.
In that case, the owner of the car would also have to share responsibility and legal actions would also be taken against him.
Presently, there is no laws to grill the owner of the vehicle in case the hired driver commits any crime. “In many cases, a clean chit is given to the vehicle’s owner if his driver is booked. The owner is used to evade penalties by shirking his responsibility,” a senior police official said.
To curb crimes committed by hired drivers, it is necessary to let the owner know about their responsibilities. Most of the time, the owner hires a driver without any police verification.
If there are strict laws against the vehicle’s owner too then he will remain more cautious about his responsibilities. He will think twice before hiring a driver, the official said.
“The proposal needs to be approved by the Judiciary and the Transport Act. Once they approve the proposal of booking the owner too, the new rule will be implemented in the next four days,” the officer said, requesting anonymity. Soon after, the order will be issued under Section 144 CrPC.
