The Delhi police achieved a major breakthrough on Wednesday when the special unit of crime branch arrested two members of a gang involved in human trafficking and also recovered a three-month-old baby girl from the traffickers.
The police acted on a tip off from a member of the gang who was arrested on 5 June. Deena Nath, who later fled from police custody, had informed the police during interrogation that the child will be sold near Vinayak Restaurant in East Jyoti Nagar.
Accordingly, the police laid a trap in the area. A decoy customer was sent to the traffickers to settle the deal with Rs 3 lakh. Two persons named Sumit Sharma (28) and Niharika (26) were apprehended from the spot.
Nath had also disclosed that he bought the girl from a woman named Rahisa Khatoon, who lives in New Usmanpur for Rs 75,000. Khatoon was reportedly paid Rs 25,000, while the remaining amount was yet to be handed over.
Following the interrogation the police arrested Khatoon, the biological mother of the recovered child, on 6 June. Khatoon confessed that she was the biological mother of the child.
She claimed that she facing financial crisis and for meeting her daily needs she sold her daughter to accused Deena Nath for Rs 75,000.‘Possibility of involvement of these criminals in other such offences is not being ruled out at this stage of investigation. However, further investigation is on,’ a police official said.
