Police nab notorious sandalwood smuggler

On Thursday a team of Delhi police apprehended notorious red wood and drug smuggler Deepak Bhardwaj.

An information was received that Deepak Bhardwaj, alongwith his associate Vinod Kumar, would be coming to Delhi in his car. A trap was laid at ISBT Ring Road in Delhi. They were apprehended under 41.1 CrPC.

Deepak Sharma a graduate from Delhi university started his criminal career in 1993 by smuggling photo chromic glasses into India from Burma. In 2000, accused Deepak ventured into human trafficking in Delhi. In 2010, he alongwith his associate K Maniappa smuggled red sandalwood to China. He used to procure red sandalwood from Andhra Pradesh through his many contacts, including Naxals and used to stock it in different godowns in NCR. When the deal was struck the wood was routed to China through Burma. He has a strong base in south India and Moreh Border. Moreh is an important trade point in India on the border with Myanmar.
