Police nab kingpin of Mewati gang

A special unit of the crime branch have arrested a fugitive, the alleged lynchpin of Mewati gangs, who was involved in the murder of a police head constable. Cops recovered a country made pistol, two live cartridges and a stolen motorcycle from him.
The accused is wanted in various other cases of serious crimes. The police was keeping track of the accused, Shakir, and on 15 April they received specific information that he would come to Munirka Marg in Vasant Vihar. The police laid a trap and arrested him after a brief scuffle. He was involved in the murder of a head constable last year. The police had arrested two members of the gang, Jamshed and Arif, both hailing from the Mewat area of Haryana, in September last year. But Shakir, who played an active role in the murder of the head constable, was still on the run.
Talking about the modus operandi of these gangs, the police said, ‘In the day time, one-two members reccee the area and as per their information, the gang enters Delhi in their Tata 407 vehicle during the night in search of livestock/cattle. Members of this gang carry weapons along with them and on slightest resistance/ checking, they do not hesitate to take extreme steps in their bid to escape’.
On interrogation, Shakir said he was associated with various gangs of Mewat. According to him, he had managed to flee in the previous attempt to arrest him. He also revealed his involvement in various other cases of robbery, attempts to murder, theft of livestocks in Haryana, NCR and Rajasthan.
The police has booked him under various sections of Indian Penal Code and Arms Act.
