Shockingly, immense shortage of police staff is the major reason why most of the cases remain unsolved. Currently, around there are 80,000 police personnel in Delhi Police, out of which 31,000 are deployed in 161 police stations in the city. According to the recent data, Delhi’s population is around 1.72 crore as a result the active duty ratio of Delhi Police is one policeman for 5,500 people residing in the national capital.
In 2014, out of 1,47,230 cases registered in 2014 that includes dacoity (78), murder (561), attempt to murder (745) , robbery (6,180), kidnapping for ransom (37), rape (2,069), snatching (6,944), molestation (4,179), hurt (1,964), house theft (12,276), motor vehicle theft (22,223), other theft (39,570) and other IPC (50,404), with the help of smart policing Delhi Police managed to solve only 44,169. However, more than one lakh cases are still unsolved. There is 458.77% increase in robbery cases in the city, but in 53.88% cases the accused remain at large and the case is still unsolved. Similarly, there is 109.41% increase in snatching cases but despite installation of 3932 CCTV cameras at 85 locations, Delhi Police failed to 74.04% of the total cases.
Last year till December 15, around 12276 houses were burgled (327.74% increase in the burglary) out of which 10920 cases are still pending and the concerned officers failed to arrest the culprits. However, Delhi Police seem more active in solving rape and dacoity cases. Despite 31.70% increase in rape cases, 80.57% cases were solved by police may be because in 94% of the total rape cases registered, the accused were found to be known to the victim which helps the police in nabbing the accused with an ease.
Speaking to Millennium Post, a senior police official said, “Shortage of police staff is the prime reason because of which as many as 70% cases remained unsolved. To meet the gap, this year around 2469 police personnels have been recruited in Delhi Police. Also, vaccines for 4000 more police personnel have been made and the recruitment process has been started.”
Another police officer said, “ In most of the cases, the policemen who are above 40 years are not computer savvy or technology freak, as a result if they are a part of an investigative team they fail to give a positive feedback to crack the case.”
