A 35-year-old police constable was severely injured after an alleged attack by ‘local goons’ at south Delhi’s Begumpur area, on Wednesday. He was trying to nab three men accused of beating a woman and her minor son at a nearby slum. The victim, Harish Kumar, a constable at the Malviya Nagar police station, had rushed to the slum when a woman came running towards him and pleaded to save her 16-year-old son, who was allegedly being beaten up by three men at 9:30 pm on Wednesday.
‘The accused, Billu, Sunny and Govind, had allegedly thrashed the woman named Guddi, a slum dweller, for spreading a tin-sheet over her accommodation. They started beating her son Naveen (16) too when he came to defend his mother. When Naveen was being thrashed, Guddi rushed out and cried for help’, said a police official. According to police, these three accused are local goons who would collect ‘protection money’ from slum dwellers at Valmiki camp in Begumpur area. The constable soon communicated the matter to the Malviya Nagar Station, who immediately sent a PCR van to help him. In the meantime, he caught one of the accused, while the others climbed the roof. ‘One of the escaped accused then threw a brick from the roof on the victim’s head and left him bleeding,’ said the official. By the time the PCR van reached the spot, the accused had fled. Harish Kumar was taken to a hospital with injuries on his head and neck. He got five stitches and he is out of danger now, the official added.
