Police chief Bassi promises to stand by ‘his men’, claims officers followed rule

According to sources in the police department, the victims have shared their four-hour ordeal with the senior police officials. Also, the concerned police officials who were present on the spot have also recorded their statements in front of top officials. On the basis of the report, Bassi has submitted a comprehensive report to Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung enclosing the medical test reports.

On Friday, chief minister Arvind Kejriwal demanded immediate suspension of ACP and SHO of Malviya Nagar police station who did not follow the instructions of law and tourism minister Somnath Bharti and allegedly verbally misbehaved with him.

Bassi has, however, stood by the police officials and said, ‘None of the officials would be suspended. They have not done anything wrong.’

Speaking to Millennium Post, a senior police official on condition of anonymity said, ‘I am proud that these police officials did not get carried away because of the pressure created by Somnath Bharti. If they had followed the instructions of the minister and would have arrested the female after sunset, we would have had to take action against the policemen.’

Meanwhile, the victims have also issued a statement saying the police have supported them.
In the comprehensive report on the happenings of the intervening night of Wednesday-Thursday when Somnath Bharti and AAP cadre stopped a taxi and made four Ugandan women hostage inside the taxi for four hours and accused them of being sex workers and drug peddlers, Bassi had written that the minister and AAP cadres detained two women and asked the PCR personnel to frisk them.

He further wrote that the PCR staff denied to follow the minister’s instruction and humbly told Bharti that they were not legally empowered to do so. Meanwhile, the cadre caught hold of four more women from Uganda and alleged that they were involved in drug trafficking and were sex workers.
‘They asked them to arrest all of them and frisk them to recover drugs. The policemen denied as it was not possible after sunset then they insisted that they should be checked inside the PCR van,’ he wrote in the report.

All of them were taken to the police station for medical examination. The report that came out on Friday morning says that the women were not under the influence of drugs or any psychotropic substance. ‘The report was also given to the L-G,’ Bassi said.
