An international drugs syndicate was busted when one of its carriers and three agents were nabbed, along with heroin worth about Rs 1.5 crore, from near Lajpat Nagar in Delhi, police said on Saturday.
‘The consignment came from Afghanistan. It was packed in 43 capsules — which were either ingested by the carrier or pushed through his rectum — and sent to Delhi, from where it was meant to be dispatched to other cities,’ said Rajiv Ranjan, deputy commissioner of police (special cell). He further said, the producers of these capsules made sure that they do not get dissolved or burst open in the human stomach.
‘Drug suppliers had attempted this technique earlier, but almost all of them failed. Some carriers even lost their lives due to consumption of excess narcotics,’ Ranjan added.
Based on a tip off, police got hold of a 27-year-old Afghan national, identified as Hamidullah and two youths from Kerala, Saifullah (30) and Sajid (30), who had come to strike a drug deal near Lajpat Nagar last Sunday.
Police recovered 890 gram heroin from their possession and arrested all three of them immediately.
On being interrogated, Hamidullah admitted that he was the carrier and the two youths who had come to meet him were agents who facilitated supply of the drugs across the country.
He also mentioned about another Afghan national, Eshaan (43), who was acting as the syndicate's master agent in India and lived in a rented room near Lajpat Nagar. Friday night, Eshaan was arrested too.
‘After further investigations, it emerged that the whole syndicate was being financed by non-resident Indians settled in Kuwait. Saifullah mentioned the name of two NRIs – Jabbar and Ali – whom he met when he went for searching a job at Kuwait. Through them, he landed in the drugs business for which he received handsome returns,’ said Rajiv Ranjan.
