Police arrests man behind rape of three minors in Delhi

When Sunil Rastogi used to approach children with a set of clothes, they never suspected anything, as he was a tailor by profession after all.

However, the Delhi Police managed to look through his façade and, in a disturbing development, found that he was a pedophile who had raped multiple children across Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand.

The police have arrested the accused and are currently trying to ascertain the number of children he has abused over the years. So far, he has been found to be involved in three cases of rape in Delhi alone, and has been charged under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act.

The case came to light when one case of rape was reported on December 13 last year. Furthermore, on January 10, two more cases were reported in Ashok Nagar police station area.

However, when the police went through the case details, they found a similar pattern in all of them. The accused had offered the victims clothes and would take them to the staircase of a building and later rape them.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (East) Omvir Singh said: “We went through the case and found that all three victims were in the age group of 9-10 years. The parents of one particular victim had informed us that the accused had lured the girls by claiming that their father had given them some clothes. The accused would later take them to the staircase of a building and rape or attempt to rape them”.

Police had started to look into the CCTV footages of the area and managed to zero in on Sunil, after they managed to get his visual leaving one of the buildings.

“We did not know that one accused would be behind all the cases. We left no stone unturned, and tried to use manual surveillance, but we did not find any substantial leads. Later, we found a suspicious looking man leaving the abandoned building. That was when we realised that there was a single perpetrator in all the cases,” said a senior police official.

The police tracked him down to his residence in Rampur, Uttar Pradesh after secret information was received regarding his whereabouts.

During his interrogation, he revealed that he had committed similar multiple offences in Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand. “In all the cases, he would approach the victims and would offer them clothes telling them that it was from their father. We are interrogating him and are trying to ascertain the number of victims involved. Further investigation is underway,” said a senior police official.
