Taking a lesson after a young boy died last year when a Delhi police official shot at him to stop him perform stunts on motorcycle, Delhi Police have decided not to use firearms to control rowdy bikers. Instead, non-lethal weapons like rubber bullets and taser guns will be used. A special instruction has been issued to police personnel to use these alternative methods from Shab-e-Barat onwards.
A police official said that the idea is to use non-lethal weapons while controlling law and order situations without causing
grievous injury or accidental deaths.
‘A special meeting was conducted by the Special Commissioner of Police to inform all the respective additional commissioners and Deputy Commissioners of Police to be soft on stunt-bikers,’ a source added.
‘Challans will be issued to the traffic violators but if the stunt bikers do not stop when asked by the policemen the officials have been warned to not to open fire at them, it might result into fatal injury to the rider. Hence, the rubber bullets and taser guns will be used for temporarily immobilising the menace created by the bikers,’ a police official added.
Last year, after the death of a 19-year-old boy who was shot by an inspector at Parliament Street when as many as 35-40 youngsters were performing stunts, Delhi Police have ordered stun guns from the USA, as reported by Millennium Post in October.
New Delhi district
being the first choice to perform stunts, the maximum number of taser guns have been distributed to this district.
The policemen who have been given these weapons have underwent proper training to learn the technique to use them.
‘To play safe, it seems that Delhi Police have tightened their belts to not to make any mistake while chasing or stopping the stunt-bikers,’ Amit Gupta, a motorcyclist, said.
