PM will take call on dialogue with Pak: Khurshid

In response to his Pakistan counterpart Hina Rabbani Khar, India’s external affairs minister Salman Khurshid on Thursday claimed that talks between the two countries have ‘not been frozen’ but a decision about the resumption of dialogue would be taken by PM Manmohan Singh.

‘The differences have to be resolved and for that we need to proceed with wisdom, keeping in mind the interest and sentiments of the nation. We will await PM’s direction in this regard,’ Khurshid told a television news channel.

Earlier, Khar called Khurshid for talks, saying that continued tension along the LoC in Jammu and Kashmir was not in the interest of South Asian peace. She was responding to the strong statement by Manmohan Singh that ‘it couldn’t be business as usual’ following the brutal killing of two Indian soldiers at LoC.

‘An atmosphere is needed for the talks to go on. We are hopeful that Pakistan will understand the message sent by our PM,’ Khurshid said, adding, ‘Some signals are positive. What we heard from the military is welcoming. But we have to assess the overall situation.’

Khurshid, along with defence minister AK Antony, also briefed the cabinet about tension at LoC and its fallout.
