PM tries to end Coalgate stand-off

As Opposition remained dissatisfied over the statement made by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Tuesday in both houses of Parliament over the missing coal files, the PM later in the day met BJP leaders Arun Jaitley, Sushma Swaraj and LK Advani at his residence.

Home minister Sushil Kumar Shinde was also present. Sources said the Prime Minister urged the BJP leaders to let Parliament function and asked them for their cooperation on key economic bills like the Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority Bill. The BJP, however, has not given any assurance from its side.

In the meeting, Singh also assured the BJP there will be thorough investigation on the missing coal files and nothing will be hidden. It is learnt that BJP leaders also raised the issue of the Prime Minister leaving Parliament just after his statement and not listening to the opposition.

The Prime Minister on Tuesday made a statement in Parliament where he insisted that the government is making all efforts to locate the untraced documents and its intent to facilitate a proper probe should not be questioned as it has nothing to hide. Contending there should be no hasty conclusion that something is fishy, he said a vast majority of papers sought by CBI have already been handed over and the government will abide by the Supreme Court timeline for handing over of all the files.
