Congress general secretary Janardhan Dwivedi may have spoken only half truth on Sunday. Dwivedi told reporters, ‘It has appeared in a section of the media that it was at the insistence of Congress President Sonia Gandhi that the two ministers were dropped. This perception is not correct. The correct position is that it was the joint decision of the Congress President and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.’
While Dwivedi came out with the statement, he did not give the details of the confabulations that took place between the prime minister and the Congress president’s office especially in view of the time lag between the announcement of the resignation of Pawan Kumar Bansal and Ashwani Kumar. It took a delegation of two ministers and a senior aide of Congress president to persuade the prime minister to direct Kumar to put in his papers. The former law minister too had told Congress president’s office that he saw no merit in the demand for his resignation.
Kumar is charged of tweaking the probe report of the CBI in the Coalgate matter to protect the prime minister. It’s a known fact that Kumar owes his elevation to PM and he indulged in blatant impropriety to protect his mentor. Singh defended Kumar till end as he predictably saw himself being exposed directly to Opposition’s fire after the exit of his protective gear.
